Go Negosyo Holds 2nd NEGOSEM Basics

The Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship - Go Negosyo conducted the Negosyo Seminar Basics on May 11, 2012 at the RFM Auditorium. This was the second time for the year 2012 that the NEGOSEM Basics was held.

“The NEGOSEM Basics seminar is for those who would like to learn about how to start a business and also for those who are already entrepreneurs but wishes to revisit the fundamentals”, shared Jap Uminga, Go Negosyo’s Programs Development Officer who co-hosted the event together with Go Negosyo Communications and Special Projects Officer Monica Ramirez.

Mr. Paulo Tibig, President of VCargo shared his insights on the importance of developing the entrepreneurial and positive mindset and some strategies on how to spot business opportunities. Meanwhile, Prof. Carlo Calimon lectured on the basics of product development and marketing. Mr. Tibig and Prof. Calimon are Go Negosyo’s angelpreneurs.

The ‘Tagumpay’ Forum, a forum which highlighted the entrepreneurial journeys of selected panelists, was also staged as value-add to the learning experience. The forum was co-presented with the Association of Filipino Franchisers Association led by its President Mr. Armando “Butz” Bartolome, who is also a member of the Go Negosyo angelpreneur network and served as the forum moderator.

Among those who shared their inspiring stories of struggles and successes were: Mr. Victor Fernando (Big Apple Express Spa), Ms. Rosanna Llenado (Ahead Tutorial), and Mr. Voltaire Magpayo (Sweet Corner). Meanwhile, three of Go Negosyo’s annual partners were given a timeslot to present their organization, its products and services which are relevant to entrepreneurs. These were Meralco, Valueline and OPMC.

A total of 98 participants joined the entrepreneurship training including delegates from ATRIEV School for the Blind and Lenard Chesire Foundation.

On The Ehje of Glory

This column will now highlight our new slogan; Go Negosyo is rallying its entrepreneurs to join us as we launch our new battlecry – Pilipinas: Now is our time! This year is our chance to start seeing things change for the better. We at Go Negosyo believe, for the past seven years, that entrepreneurship will lead this country out of poverty.

Entrepreneurship is not only for those who have their own business, but also for those who work in private companies and even in government (through intrapreneurship). In the end, what we want to see is an enterprising Filipino who is as passionate and hardworking as a Chinese or Indian entrepreneur. Greater transparency and good governance is now happening. The serious attempt to bring down corruption and to have greater transparency in governance brings about greater confidence not only in local negosyantes, but especially in foreign investors.  And I have to say, Sec. Felix the CAT

This story is not about that popular cartoon character Felix the Cat, which was loved by children and adults back in the 90s. I am talking about Felix Ang of CATS Motors, Inc., who is known for providing a world-class automobile ownership experience in the Philippines. Just like his cartoon feline counterpart, he exhibited curiosity and an innovative character in running his business, which were the reasons why he propelled into success.

Felix is one of the entrepreneurs that I have always admired. He is the face of Mercedes-Benz in the Philippines, which is considered as one of the most luxurious car brands in the world. He may be a prominent figure in the automotive industry today, but this humble man never forgets where he came from and the steps that he took to where he is now. Read the rest of this entry »

The Great Visayan Adventure

Let me take time out from my usual Go Negosyo columns and share with you our dive adventure in the Visayas. As I write this column, we are still at sea with friends, moving from island to island. The promise of tourism as a negosyo opportunity is definitely now happening. Bohol has new resorts opening, with the Regent group of Boracay buying Alona Panglao; the Bellevue group’s resort is now under construction; and rumors of the Discovery group setting up soon.

There are quite a number of newcomers setting up in different parts of the Visayas. What makes the Visayas different, aside from a number of sand bars, is the rich marine life where many resorts have started to create their own marine sanctuary, with them charging anywhere between 100 pesos to a high of 600 pesos. The highlight of our trip so far is the whale sharks of Oslob, and definitely, there is none other like this in the world. While some people would criticize that this is not a natural thing, since the whale sharks are fed like pets, I look at it differently. At least these fishermen, who at one point harmed the whales till a foreigner told them he would pay them to feed the sharks, can do their share in protecting the whale sharks and look after the environment. Pilipinas: Now is Our Time!

For close to seven years now since we started the advocacy on Go Negosyo, we have been pushing for a mindset change among Filipinos: that we are not destined for poverty or to be the laggards of Asia. Each and every Filipino can rise above poverty and succeed in life by having the right positive mindset and knowhow, but success is also for those who want it. We seemed to be in a cycle where good things do not last long, as misery and crab mentality somehow crept in. There is no doubt that poverty has remained our country’s biggest problem, but it does not mean that we have not seen successful entrepreneurs who have done well, or even OFWs who were able to send their children to college or buy their own house.

We need to stop being fatalistic about things. Sometimes, our religious beliefs overcome our earnest desire to create our own destiny. We have to realize that the power of prayer only works when one has great faith, believing that a miracle will happen without a doubt, but it has to be accompanied by hard work, determination, and creativity. Imagine if we can apply this to how we feel for our country. This outlook will fulfill our need to break our cycle of misery which we are in, starting from the time of Marcos, to Cory, and then Ramos, to Estrada, to GMA, and now with PNoy. Go Negosyo Visits Samal Island, Completes NSB 1st Run

Completing the first run of the Negosyo sa Barangay Entrepreneurship Development Program, Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship Go Negosyo conducted the Mindanao leg in Camp Holiday Resort, Samal Island in Davao from April 19 to 22. Negosyo sa Barangay is a project of the Center for Future Leadership, Department of Trade and Industry – Philippine Trade Training Center and Go Negosyo.

The entrepreneurship training was attended by 500 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Officials coming from different parts of Mindanao including Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Saranggani, to name just a few. Also in attendance were delegates from Luzon’s Mindoro.

Other speakers included Manok Mabuhay Foundation’s Mr. Victor Madlangbayan (Empleyo o Negosyo?) and DTI Bureau of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development’s Management Services Division’s Officer-in-Charge Ms. Ma. Victoria Magkalas (Barangay Micro-Business Enterprise).

Likewise, entrepreneurship workshops which were aimed at engaging the participants were conducted by DTI PTTC alongside raffle draws and entertainment numbers by ASAP’s Princess Velasco and TV5’s Morisette Amon, and Gerald Santos.

The Samal training followed the Baguio and Bohol runs in Luzon and Visayas, completing the program on basics of entrepreneurship for Barangay and SK Officials. The Negosyo sa Barangay: Next Level is scheduled this year in Palawan (Luzon), Boracay Island (Visayas) and Camiguin Island (Mindanao).

The Mango King

Since I started the advocacy almost seven years ago, Go Negosyo has been able to connect aspiring and well-known entrepreneurs, creating a big network of negosyantes who are helping each other to succeed. More than that, the advocacy not only teaches people to have a positive mindset and to establish their own businesses, but it also serves as an inspiration through the stories of how today’s bossings have built their way up.

Two weeks ago, I have shared the story of Rosalind Wee, the founder of the Marine Resources Development Corporation. Today, I am sharing another story of another entrepreneur and a good friend of mine who has shown hard work, passion, and creativity, which I think should be a source of inspiration among Filipinos, especially in the agriculture sector.
